Is Level 1 Food Hygiene suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. Level 1 is designed for new starters and individuals with little or no previous food safety training. It provides a basic introduction to food hygiene principles.
Do I need Level 1 if I already have Level 2?
No. Level 2 covers all Level 1 content in greater depth. Level 1 is typically suitable for low-risk or introductory roles.
Is this course enough for kitchen staff?
Level 1 is suitable for staff with limited food handling responsibilities. Most kitchen staff preparing or cooking food will require Level 2 training.
Does this course cover allergens?
Level 1 introduces allergen awareness, but it does not replace dedicated allergen training such as our Advanced Allergen Awareness course.
How quickly can I complete the course?
Most learners complete Level 1 within one to two hours, depending on pace.
Is the certificate accepted by Environmental Health Officers?
Yes. The course is designed in line with UK food safety expectations and is suitable for demonstrating basic hygiene training during inspections.
Do I need a food hygiene certificate if I only handle packaged food?
UK law requires food handlers to be trained to a level appropriate to their role rather than to hold a specific certificate. For low-risk roles such as handling packaged food, serving drinks or front-of-house work, Level 1 is the recognised standard and gives you a certificate to show inspectors and employers.
How long does a Level 1 Food Hygiene certificate last?
There is no legal expiry date, but the Food Standards Agency and most employers recommend refreshing food hygiene training every three years, or sooner if your role changes.
